How to Water a New Lawn: Seed or Sod
Watering Newly Laid Sod:
- Water Immediately After Installation: As soon as the sod is laid, water it thoroughly. Make sure the water soaks through the sod and reaches the soil underneath. This gives the sod the moisture it needs to settle in and root properly.
- Keep it Moist, Not Soaked: For the first 2-3 weeks after installation, you’ll want to water your sod daily (preferably early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler). Aim for around 1 to 1.5 inches of water per day, but avoid puddling or pooling water.
- Gradually Reduce Watering: After a couple of weeks, you can start reducing the frequency of watering. Gradually transition to watering every other day and then eventually 2-3 times a week as the grass becomes established.
- Watering in WNY: If it’s a wet spring, you may not need to water as often. But if it’s a dry stretch, make sure your sod/grass seed is getting enough moisture.
Watering Grass Seed:
- Water Gently, But Often: Right after we spread the seed, water the area lightly. The goal is to keep the soil moist but not soggy. Overwatering can wash away the seed, so think gentle and consistent. Watering once or twice a day is usually a good starting point.
- Keep It Moist Until Germination: You’ll want to keep the seeded area consistently moist for 2-3 weeks, depending on the weather.
- Don’t Overwater: It’s easy to get excited and water too much, but remember, your seed needs oxygen to grow. So, avoid over-saturating the soil. Once you start to see the grass sprout (yay!), you can gradually cut back on watering.
Additional Tips for Both Seed and Sod:
- Use a Sprinkler System: If you have a sprinkler system, now is the time to use it! A timer ensures consistent watering and helps you avoid over-watering or under-watering.
- Watch for Puddles: Whether you’re watering sod or seed, always keep an eye out for puddles or pooling water. If you see that happening, adjust your watering routine.
- Patience: Remember, new grass takes time to establish. So, don’t be discouraged if it seems like it’s taking a while. With proper care, your new lawn will start to flourish.
