Arborvitae Hedge Wall Install in a Seriously Tight Space

Privacy is one of the most common things homeowners ask us about. Fences help, but they only go so far. A solid hedge wall made up of mature arborvitae? That's a completely different level - natural, dense, and built to fill in even more over time.

This one was not an easy job. The planting area was a narrow corridor sandwiched between a chain-link fence and a deck structure. Barely enough room to swing a shovel, let alone maneuver full-sized trees into place. Every single plant had to be carefully positioned by hand. No shortcuts, no skipping the prep work.

We started by clearing and loosening the soil along the entire run - important groundwork that most people don't think about but makes a huge difference in how well the trees establish. From there, we brought in a full load of large, healthy arborvitae and set them one by one along the fence line. Spacing them correctly matters a lot here. Too close and you create problems down the road. Too far apart and you don't get that solid wall effect the customer was after.

The finished result is a clean, uniform hedge line running the full length of the yard. These trees are already full and dense at install. That's the advantage of going with larger stock - you're not waiting years for privacy. You get structure and screening right away, and it only improves from here.
