Patio Privacy Done Right with Hetzi Junipers and Pea Gravel

A new patio is a great start - but without something to screen it off, it can feel exposed and less like a place you actually want to spend time. That's the problem we set out to solve here. The goal was to give this outdoor space a sense of enclosure without making it feel boxed in or heavy.

We went with a row of staked Hetzi Junipers along the planting bed to form a natural privacy wall. These are a solid choice for this kind of job. They fill in fast, stay dense year-round, and have a clean, upright shape that looks intentional rather than just thrown in. Paired with fresh dark mulch, the bed has a polished look right from day one - and it only gets better as the junipers mature and fill out.

The pea gravel area ties it all together. It gives the space a finished surface that's low maintenance and easy to navigate, and the curved edging keeps everything in its place without looking rigid. Freestanding stairs connect the patio cleanly to the space, making the whole layout feel intentional and functional rather than pieced together.
