Paver Patio Install in Progress in Lancaster NY

A lot of yards in the Lancaster and Bowmansville area have that one spot - the area between the back door and the garage that just never got figured out. Muddy in the spring, scraggly grass in the summer, and basically ignored the rest of the year. That's exactly what we were working with here. Functional space with zero use. We set out to fix that.

Before a single paver goes down, the prep work has to be done right. We staked out the layout, stripped the area down, and used a laser level to dial in the grade across the entire footprint. That part matters a lot more than people realize. A paver patio that isn't properly graded will shift, settle unevenly, and cause drainage headaches down the road. Getting the base right is where the longevity is.

From there, we laid down landscape fabric across the compacted base before bringing in gravel. That layer keeps weeds from pushing up through the base and helps with long-term drainage. Once the gravel was spread and the screeding pipes were set, the paver install started section by section - keeping everything square and tight from the first course.

The pavers going in here are large-format stone in a charcoal tone, and they're coming together clean. Each piece gets set carefully so the pattern stays consistent and the joints stay uniform. No rushing it. The kind of work that holds up for years starts with each step being done properly before moving to the next one.

This is a job still in progress, but it's shaping up to be a space this family will actually use. A clean, hard-surface area right off the back steps connecting to the garage - no more mud, no more wasted yard. That's the whole point.
